Starting a Venue
or becoming a Professionally qualified instructor
(United Kingdom Alliance of Professional Teachers of Dancing (UKA))
To reach the level required to become a Professional (UKA) instructor often means you have to raise or change the level of your instruction, dancing and your understanding of the dance. Modern Jive has a lot more structure than most people realize including footwork (danced to two-four timing). To become a Professional Instructor (UKA) you need to learn the footwork approved by the UKA, and be able to teach it to your students, (the UKA approved footwork & structure has many benefits and can dramatically raise the level of your students dancing).
The road to becoming a Professionally Qualified Instructor (UKA) means that you will probably have to attend an Instructor or crossover course. This will teach you about the fundamentals of the dance, the footwork (often not taught), how to teach Turning & Spinning correctly (based on 'Chaine' turn), teaching moves correctly (including to a count), and structuring lessons. You will have to sit an exam that includes a dance demonstration (to demonstrate your ability), a teaching demonstration and questions about the dance; how to teach a lesson to a Professionally standard, running a venue and safety. By the end of your Instructor / crossover course this should be nothing to worry about.
Membership of the UKA starts from under a £100 a year & includes many benefits including insurance.
The organization that arranges Professional (UKA) Modern Jive instructor examinations in the UK is a Non Profit making organization. The LeRoc Federation is a non profit making organization, its not a franchise (as often believed) but a facility for organizing and training instructors to professional (UKA) standards.
Not all LeRoc Venues are members of the UKA & do not offer professional UKA instruction.
LeRec Modern Jive is the original name for modern jive, it is generic and can be used legally by any person, as it is not a trade mark or owned by any individual or organization.
